GETTING READY TO TOILET TRAIN

Is your child ready to toilet train?

However hard you try, toilet training is not going to be a success unless your child is developmentally ready. Triple P psychologist and Little Treasures columnist Anna Malone says children are ready to train at different ages, but most become dry during the day between two and a half and four years old.

Signs they're ready

Anna suggests looking for these signs that your child is ready for toilet training.

  • A momentary pause in their actions or their play as they sense they are doing a wee
  • Hiding behind a curtain or moving to a certain place when they know they are going to do a poor
  • Showing an interest in watching parents use the toilet.
  • Having regular bowel movements
  • Letting you know that their nappies are wet or dirty
  • Longer dry periods before they do a wee
  • Saying they need the toilet
