COOL IT KIDS - WAYS TO COOL DOWN WITHOUT A POOL

Cool it, kids

Not many of us have the luxury of a pool in the backyard, but there are lots of other ways to cool down when everyone gets hot and sticky:

  • Turn the sprinkler on high and let your kids run through it. If mum or dad does it too, it will be twice the fun. Braver, older kids can jump over the sprinkler.
  • Give them turns with the hose, making patterns on the concrete, filling containers, watering plants. They're bound to get wet.
  • Make a waterfall down the steps: save two-liter milk bottles, cut a big hold in one side of each bottle, then position one on each step, lying them on their uncut sides with the spout pointing out. Put the hose into the side hole of the top bottle - once the water level reaches the edge of the spout, it will flow out and into the side hole of the bottle on the step below, and so on. Let your kids take turns pouring diluted food coloring into the top bottle to see the water change color, and add flowers, leaves and other bits and pieces to see what will flow down and what won't. Collect the water in a big container or paddling pool at the bottom. If you have any pipes or guttering you could attach them to the bottom bottle to make a longer waterway.
  • Bring the baby bath outside, add some bubble bath, and let them wash their dolls or action figures. They'll probably end up in the bath too.
  • Throw water balloons.
  • Break out the water pistols or use spray bottles on each other.
  • If you have more than one watering can, pretend you're flowers that need a drink. Or you could use a sieve and a bucket, or punch holes in the bottom of a milk bottle.
  • Enlist their help to wash the car, or the house. They'll end up wet too.
  • For a cool hidey-hole, drape some sheets over the washing line to make an airy tent.
  • Get out a toy tea-set and sit in the shade with a jug of icy water. Share a tea party with your toddler.
