BREASTFEEDING AND YOUR SEX LIFE

What kind of contraceptives can I use while breastfeeding?

The combined contraceptive pill is not recommended, because this can reduce your milk supply. You can use the mini-pill, condoms, depot proverb injection, the IUD (from six weeks) or a diaphragm, which needs to be fitted three months after you give birth.

Breastfeeding offers some protection from pregnancy. Family Planning says that if you meet three criteria – your baby is under six months of age; you are fully breastfeeding your baby with no supplementation; and you haven’t had your period – this offers a 98% chance of preventing pregnancy.

Does breastfeeding reduce interest in sex?

Yes, it may. When you’re breastfeeding, your body produces less estrogen, which is one of the hormones that make you feel sexy. The low estrogen levels can also cause vaginal dryness which may make sex uncomfortable. A lubricant or a prescribed vaginal estrogen cream can help.
