BABY WIND

In the first few weeks of life, babies swallow quite a lot of air while feeding. They often gulp if the let-down of milk is too fast for them to suck and swallow normally.

Trying to slow down the process will help. Lying down to feed, with the baby at your side, is one way of overcoming the problem. Fortunately, the baby soon learns to cope with an oversupply. It is not necessary to spend long periods trying to wind a baby; here are some tips to help:

  • Hold the baby in a stretched-out position, upright over the shoulder.
  • Place the baby upright between your legs and then rub her back gently.
  • Violent patting and rubbing will not help your baby to expel wind.
  • Some babies pass wind into their nappies rather then through the mouth.
  • It is normal for babies to bring up little milk with wind.
